Volkswagen T5 assembly begins in Indonesia

2012 Volkswagen T5

  • Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles starts activities in growth region
  • SKD kits dispatched from Wedemark to Jakarta
HANNOVER / JAKARTA : January 30, 2012 - By 2015, around 1,200 Transporters and Multivans are planned to roll off the assembly line in Indonesia’s capital, Jakarta. As of now, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is starting SKD assembly of the T5 in Indonesia for the local market, together with the importer Garuda Mataram Motor.

Indomobil/Garuda Mataram Motor has been cooperating with Volkswagen and Audi for several years already. “We are very pleased that this successful and trusted partner is now also assembling our models for this growth-oriented market", says Jens Ocksen, Member of the Management of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles for Production. “This ensures the product quality which Volkswagen customers are accustomed to, and which they expect from a premium product like the T5.” It is initially planned to assemble around 220 T5s in 2012. In February the first vehicles will be delivered.

Garuda Mataram Motor is also responsible for sales activities. The vehicles will be sold via six special Volkswagen passenger car dealers in Indonesia. Additionally the T5s will be presented to potential customers such as public authorities, banks, insurance companies and branch offices of European enterprises. The T5 will also be on display at the Indonesia Motor Show.

“We are exploiting the chances open to our vehicles in this growth-oriented market. The Multivan will be offered as a premium limousine, the Transporter as a reliable commercial vehicle”, stresses Harald Schomburg, Member of the Brand Board of Management of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles for Sales and Marketing. “SKD-production will open the door and enable us to gain shares of the market. We view our competitive prospects very positively.”

The acronym SKD stands for “Semi Knocked Down” and denotes vehicles which are partially disassembled. In the case of the T5 for the Indonesian market, this means that Transporters and Multivans are taken by truck from the main plant in Hanover to the CKD/SKD Center in Bissendorf / Wedemark, about 16 km away. There, they are partially disassembled. The SKD kits are then transported via Hamburg to Jakarta by freighter. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ partner on the spot, Indomobil/Garuda Mataram Motor, then imports and pays duty on the Transporter and Multivan kits before reassembling them on site.

ŠKODA to present the new Citigo at 2012 Geneva Motor Show

ŠKODA Citigo

  • Exhibition debut at 2012 Geneva Motor Show
  • Model line extended into new market segments
  • ŠKODA model offensive is defining element in manufacturer’s Growth Strategy
MLADÁ BOLESLAV : January 30, 2012 ŠKODA will present the new Citigo subcompact to the public as a five-door version for the first time at the Geneva Auto Salon in early 2012. Media representatives will be offered a preview of the new ŠKODA including test drives in February 2012. The five-door version will be successively launched in European markets together with the three-door version from mid-May 2012.

The Citigo represents ŠKODA’s entry into the fast growing subcompact segment. The new model was successfully introduced in ŠKODA’s home market, the Czech Republic, in late 2011. From this year, the Citigo is to conquer new customer groups for ŠKODA, thus contributing to the brand’s growth strategy. ŠKODA aims to increase its worldwide deliveries to a minimum of 1.5 million units a year by 2018. In 2011, the company achieved yet another sales record in its 117-year corporate history, selling 879,200 units.

The Citigo ranks among the most compact and, at the same time, among the roomiest of its segment. In keeping with the brand’s ‘Simply Clever’ claim, the car impresses with a number of ingenious features such as a photo and document holder, a bag hook on the glove compartment and a range of net holders.
The Citigo’s designers placed great emphasis on safety, winning the car the top score of five stars in the Euro NCAP crash test. And another premiere: the new city car is also the first ŠKODA model ever to sport the brand’s new logo.

Powering the Citigo is a three-cylinder petrol engine with one litre of displacement in two versions with 44 kW/60 hp or 55 kW/75 hp. In its most efficient Green tec variant, the new Citigo achieves a mileage of 4.1 l/100 km, CO2 emissions in the new ŠKODA model amount to just 96 g CO2/km.

The smallest member of the ŠKODA family has recently become Best City Car in the largest Czech poll, the Car of the Year 2012.

Ford's 1.0-litre EcoBoost turbo petrol engine debuts in all-new focus

1.0-litre Ford EcoBoost turbo petrol engine
  • Unique new 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engine offered across Ford Focus range
  • Up to 125PS – same as 1.6 naturally-aspirated engine
  • Fuel economy of up to 58.9mpg
  • CO2 emissions as low as 109g/km, resulting in zero road tax (VED) in first year
  • Maximum engine torque of 170Nm between 1,400 and 4,500rpm exceeds 1.6-litre for excellent drivability
  • Developed by UK-based engineers at Dunton and Dagenham
BRENTWOOD, UK : January 30, 2012 – Ford’s high tech, ultra-efficient, turbocharged, direct injection 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine goes on sale across the Ford Focus range in the UK next month.  This unique, industry-first EcoBoost engine delivers performance to rival a traditional 1.6-litre engine with significantly improved fuel efficiency and class-leading ultra-low CO2 emissions.

2012 Ford Focus

The 1.0-litre, three-cylinder EcoBoost engine is available with two power levels – in the five-door Focus at 125PS it delivers a combined fuel economy of 56.5mpg and low petrol CO2 emissions of 114g/km (a level unmatched by Focus competitors with similar power outputs), while the 100PS version delivers a combined fuel economy of 58.9mpg and outright best-in-class petrol CO2 emissions of 109g/km.

Around 200 UK engineers based at Dunton and Dagenham successfully developed a powertrain which not only leads on fuel economy but also delivers the refined and spirited driving performance that customers have come to expect from Ford.

Though the 1.0-litre EcoBoost cylinder block can fit onto a sheet of A4 paper it delivers up to 125PS and 170Nm peak torque (200Nm with overboost) between 1,400 and 4,500rpm, giving it the highest power density of any Ford production engine to date.

Graham Hoare, European executive powertrain director based at Dunton, said:  "This is the third addition to our acclaimed EcoBoost engine family.  Joining the 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre EcoBoost engines which span 150PS to 240PS, this 1.0-litre EcoBoost signals a new era of downsized, super frugal engines for the sub-130PS segment.  During development our UK engineers focused onimproving thermal efficiency and reducing friction of the engine's internal moving parts, especially during warm-up."

Customer savings

In addition to the customer benefits resulting from improved fuel consumption and petrol being up to 10p per litre cheaper than diesel, the lower CO2 emissions translate into direct customer savings.  The 100PS and 125PS version will both qualify for zero vehicle excise duty in the first year and then £20 (100PS) and £30 (125PS) per annum thereafter.  Compared with the current 1.6-litre 105PS and 125PS engines, this represents savings of £115 in year one and £95 and £85 respectively in subsequent years.

Company car drivers will see attractive benefit-in-kind rates of only 13 per cent in 2012/2013 equating to savings on a Focus Zetec of up to £32 per month at the 40 per cent tax level versus the current 1.6-litre 105 and 125PS engines.

Mark Ovenden, Ford Britain managing director, said: “Gone are the days when the number of cylinders dictates performance.  This highly efficient, technically advanced powertrain is not only great fun to drive, but it delivers fuel economy improvements and ultra-low CO2 emissions which lead to real world cost savings for our customers.”

New Ford Focus range is priced from £13,995 on the road.  The latest price list, effective 22 February 2012, introducing Focus with the 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine, is attached.  This engine is priced £250 (on the road) above the 1.6-litre 125PS engine and will subsequently feature in Ford C-MAX, Grand C-MAX and all-new Ford B-MAX later this year.

Marketing of the New Fiat Strada to kick off soon

2012 Fiat Strada

The New Fiat Strada will be available from Italian dealerships from the end of January. Made in the FIASA plant in Betim (Brazil), the new model will follow in the footsteps of South America's leading light transport vehicle. With no fewer than 127,800 vehicles sold worldwide, the Strada was the second most popular Fiat Professional model after the Fiat Ducato in 2011.

The New Fiat Strada comes in three outfits (Working, Trekking, Adventure) and three body types (Short Cab, Long Cab, Crew Cab) for a total of six different versions. The most important innovation is the introduction of the Crew Cab version (for Working and Adventure versions), which can comfortably carry four people while maintaining a loading capacity of up to 650 kg at the same time.

Equipped with a powerful 95 HP 1.3 MultiJet 16v Euro 5 engine, the model is both versatile and multifunctional. This is demonstrated by the Working single cab version for professionals who are looking for a "purely commercial vehicle". Interesting is the new crew cab version for mixed use allowing up to four people to be carried plus tools and materials.

For the most demanding uses, the E-Locker electronic locking differential is available to help tackle slippery terrain. All these features allow it to compete with larger pick-up trucks but with the added advantage of lower purchase price, running costs and fuel consumption.

Prices (before tax) range from 12,900 euros for the 95 HP 1.3 MultiJet 16v Working Single Cab version to 16,000 euros for the top-of-the-range 95 HP 1.3 MultiJet 16v Adventure Crew Cab version.

Style

The style conveys the image of a strong, dynamic and functional vehicle capable of good performance and extremely low running costs. The front end is one of the most noticeable innovations of the new model. The tougher, no-nonsense bumper has a renewed design with two air vents now grouped in a single rectangular box and the new headlights (single-lens for the Working outfit and double-lens for the Trekking). Much more assertive is the front of the Adventure version: painted in matching body colour it has a black grille and chrome-plated inserts framed by an insert which continues over the wheel arch protection. The integrated fog lights are fitted in the lower part.

The Long Cab and Crew Cab versions have lengthwise roof bars and spoiler with integrated third brake light in addition to plenty of room in the passenger compartment.

The overall dimensions of the vehicle are practically unchanged with respect to the previous series: length 4409 mm (4457 mm for the Adventure version), width 1664 (1740 mm for the Adventure versions) and a wheelbase of 2718 mm.

The Fiat Strada inside plenty of comfort inside for occupants and is very carefully designed throughout. This is demonstrated by the new upholstery, the brand-new dashboard and the original clear, easy-to-read instruments. Ergonomic, antisubmarining seats, the height-adjustable steering wheel (standard on Trekking and Adventure) and the climate control system (standard on Adventure) make travelling and working on the New Fiat Strada even more pleasant, comfortable and safe.

Load compartment

A strong point of the New Fiat Strada is its large rear box, which is 1685 mm long (1332 mm on long cab versions, 1082 on crew cab versions), and 1300 mm wide (1070 mm between wheel arches). Large and with a regular shape to make it easy to exploit to the full, it is provided with scratch-resistant protective lining designed to withstand extreme temperatures.

Robust hooks used to fix the transported objects in total safety are arranged on the sides and bottom of the box and intelligently placed, so as not to hinder loading and unloading operations. Access to the load compartment is also facilitated by the rear board, covered in non-slip material which can be folded by 90° and now even removable. It can bear a weight of 300 kg. The payload including driver ranges from 630 to 705 kg according to the version, while the gross vehicle weight is 1915 kg. The towable weight is 1000 kg.

Engine

The New Strada is up for any challenge with its brilliant 1.3 MultiJet 16v Euro 5 engine, which delivers a maximum power of 95 HP and a torque of 200 Nm (20.4 kgm at 1500 rpm).

Equipped with variable geometry turbocharger and intercooler, the engine ensures excellent performance with low running costs. Consumption is virtually the same as the previous Euro 4 85 HP engine (up to 5.3 litre/100 km in the combined cycle). This is even more remarkable when compared to that of the bulky pick-up trucks made by competitors which all link high consumption to high power.

Range

The Strada offers plenty of standard equipment: new instruments with trip computer, height-adjustable steering wheel (on Trekking and Adventure), door mirror manually adjustable from the inside and ABS. Additional standard features of the New Strada Adventure include climate control system, fog lights, alloy wheels with 205/65 R15 oversized, lug tread tyres.

For extra versatility on the most demanding missions, Adventure versions come with a new standard electronic locking differential called E-Locker to effectively assist tackling slippery terrain in general, where the extremely performance typically offered by a 4X4 is not needed.

In detail, the system can lock the front differential, providing all the available torque to the wheel with the best grip to get the vehicle out of tricky situations: "off-road-like" performance combined with all the winning features of a 4x2. The E-Locker is convenient because it does not imply the extra costs of four-wheel drive, it does not penalise tare and payload and it has no impact on consumption and running costs (because the vehicle consumes like a 4x2 when the system is off). Proof of the Adventure's off-road personality is the dashboard which, on E-Locker versions, is complemented by a supplementary compass and roll and pitch meter instrument.

Finally, when it comes to comfort, the New Fiat Strada has a long list of optional equipment for customising your vehicle: radio with CD player, climate control system, sun roof, leather steering wheel (Adventure only) and alloy rims.

The MINI Roadster

2012 MINI Roadster

MUNICH : January 28, 2012 - The driving fun sewn into the fabric of every MINI never fails to bring a smile to the face. And now it can also be enjoyed – with the roof up or down – in the first model from the brand designed strictly for two people. The MINI Roadster is the sixth model in the British premium carmaker’s line-up and the first open-top two-seater in the brand’s history. This typically MINI interpretation of a compact roadster gives the small car segment another shot in the arm. Powerful engines and sophisticated chassis technology with model-specific tuning see to it that the characteristic MINI go-kart feeling is always on tap.

The MINI Roadster’s classical soft-top roof, which can be opened and closed quickly and easily, ensures open-air driving pleasure is there to be lapped up at every opportunity. When it comes to optimising occupant protection the MINI Roadster is fitted with a pair of roll-over bars behind the seats. And whether the roof is open or closed, the driver and passenger have a 240-litre load compartment at their disposal. The wide through-loading facility into the passenger compartment provides an additional dose of practicality.

Design: classical roadster lines, hallmark MINI design language.

The faithful reproduction of the hallmark MINI design language within the proportions of a roadster gives the open-top two-seater an unmistakable and irresistible charisma. Even with the roof closed the MINI Roadster displays an elegant, sweeping silhouette, with the transition from soft-top to rear end highlighting its characteristic three-box design particularly clearly. Characteristic MINI design features leave little doubt as to the brand identity of the new model.

Engines: impressive power, exemplary efficiency.

The MINI Roadster will be available with a choice of four powerful – yet also highly efficient – petrol and diesel engines from launch. The model line-up ranges from the MINI Cooper Roadster (90 kW/122 hp), via the MINI Cooper SD Roadster (105 kW/143 hp) and MINI Cooper S Roadster (135 kW/184 hp), to the sharpest performer of all, the 155 kW/211 hp MINI John Cooper Works Roadster.

Chassis: agility and precision ensure unbeatable driving fun.

Teaming up with the powerful engines and customary MINI front-wheel drive, chassis technology of a quality unparalleled in the small car segment and tuned specially for the MINI Roadster imbues the new model with the brand’s hallmark driving fun. Electric Power Steering with speed-sensitive power assistance comes as standard, as does DSC (Dynamic Stability Control), while Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) with Electronic Differential Lock Control (EDLC) – standard on the MINI John Cooper Works Roadster, optional on all other models – adds even greater assurance on slippery surfaces and additional sports performance under dynamic cornering.

Optimised weight balance and aerodynamic properties.

A torsionally rigid body (complete with special strengthening elements) and
low centre of gravity enhance both the handling agility and safety of the MINI Roadster. Meanwhile, front and head-thorax airbags, an extremely rigid windscreen frame and polished stainless steel roll-over bars fixed to the body join forces in the name of occupant protection. The aerodynamic balance of the MINI Roadster is optimised by an active rear spoiler, which extends automatically once the car reaches a speed of 80 km/h (50 mph).

High-quality standard equipment, broad scope for individualisation.

The MINI Roadster underlines its premium character with a high-quality range of standard equipment, including air conditioning (MINI Cooper S Roadster, MINI Cooper SD Roadster, MINI John Cooper Works Roadster), electrically adjustable exterior mirrors, Park Distance Control, height-adjustable seats and an audio system with MP3-compatible CD player and AUX IN connection. Levels of comfort and individuality can be further enhanced by specifying attractive options such as xenon Adaptive Headlights, black headlight housing, Comfort Access and the Always Open Timer. And the MINI Roadster also offers in-car use of innovative MINI Connected infotainment and communications functions.

Made in England: MINI Roadster built at MINI Plant Oxford.

The character of the MINI Roadster also owes much to its British roots; it will be produced alongside the MINI, MINI Clubman, MINI Convertible and MINI Coupé in Great Britain. The arrival of the new model sees the assembly plant on the outskirts of Oxford, the press shop in Swindon and the Hams Hall engine factory gain even further in importance. MINI already ranks as the country’s third-largest carmaker, and the BMW Group is investing around £500 million in the ongoing expansion and modernisation of its manufacturing facilities in Britain up to 2014.
