HSV GTS: 430kW supercharged V8 muscle car details leaked
The HSV GTS will become the most powerful production car in Australia�??s history when the 430kW monster launches later this year.
It�??s news that has been a poorly kept secret and HSV�??s plans to contain details of its new Gen-F range have been dealt a further blow with the blatant breech of an official media embargo by an Australian car magazine.
CarAdvice has seen the new HSVs in the flesh and had been abiding by the embargo ahead of an official reveal date of May 15.
The leaked information confirms the new HSV GTS will be powered by a 430kW/740Nm tune of General Motors�?? supercharged 6.2-litre �??LSA�?? V8 from the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, easily bettering the 375kW/640Nm output of the limited edition HSV W427 of 2008-2009.
The supercharged V8 is also expected to make the new HSV GTS the quickest Australian-made car ever, bettering the 4.5-second 0-100km/h sprint laid down by the current benchmark, the 335kW/575Nm FPV GT RSPEC.
The new HSV GTS will become the first Australian-made car with a torque vectoring system, which is designed to improve the vehicle�??s cornering ability by reducing understeer, as well as powerful new braking system with six-piston front calipers.
The rest of the HSV Gen-F range �?" which launches a few months ahead of the GTS in June �?" will continue with GM�??s naturally aspirated 6.2-litre �??LS3�?? V8, which will now be offered at three distinct output levels.
Entry-level HSV ClubSport and Maloo models will carry over the 317kW/550Nm tune from the outgoing E3 line-up, and R8 versions of the ClubSport, Maloo and Tourer will continue with a slightly more powerful 325kW/550Nm unit.
A new 340kW/570Nm tune will be fitted to the updated HSV Senator Signature and long-wheelbase Grange models, and will be available in the R8 variants as part of an optional �??SV Enhanced�?? package.
Continental tyres replace Bridgestones as the rubber of choice, wrapping around 20-inch alloy wheels across the new Gen-F range.
While HSV is yet to release images of the new model, the homegrown sports car range is set to sport less polarising styling, with the in-your-face bonnet nostrils and hexagonal tailpipes of the outgoing E3 benched for more sophisticated features.
A number of advanced technology features developed for the VF Commodore including head-up display, forward collision and blind spot monitoring, electric power steering and a electric park brake will also be introduced to the HSV portfolio for the first time.

Porsche 911 Turbo: 412kW auto-only coupe revealed
The 991-generation Porsche 911 Turbo and Turbo S have been revealed.
Nestling a 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged flat six-cylinder engine behind its wider rear hips �?" a further 28mm wider than the already-widened body of the Carrera 4 models �?"� the Turbo produces 383kW, up from 368kW with the previous model, and the Turbo S a fuller 412kW, up from 390kW. Torque outputs are not yet revealed.
This generation of Porsche 911 Turbo models employ only a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, a move that follows the track-focused naturally aspirated 911 GT3 revealed earlier this year.
Together with a new Porsche Traction Management (PTM) all-wheel-drive system, active rear axle steering, adaptive aerodynamics, the Turbo gets to 100km/h in 3.2 seconds when optioned with the Sport Chrono Package Plus. That pack is standard on the Turbo S, which slices a further tenth of the time.
The top speed of the 911 Turbo S is 318km/h, and the car wearing standard production tyres is claimed to have lapped the Nurburgring in �??well under�?� seven minutes and 30 seconds.
Fuel consumption reductions of up to 16 per cent have been achieved, with both the 911 Turbo and Turbo S claimed to consume 9.7L/100km combined. An auto stop-start function is standard on both models, which now shuts off the engine during coasting to a stop, in addition to decoupling the transmission when cruising off the throttle.
Porsche claims its new all-wheel-drive system delivers �??faster and more precise power distribution to the two axles�?�. It has electronically controlled and activated multi-plate coupling and, for the first time, a new water cooling function aimed to direct more power to the front wheels than before, where necessary.
Porsche also claims that it continues to be the only manufacturer to offer two turbochargers in a petrol engine, both of which have variable turbine geometry.
The chassis of both Turbo models is 100mm longer than regular Porsche 911 models, with 20-inch wheels standard and an active anti-roll bar system optional on Turbo and standard on Turbo S as part of the Sport Chrono Package, which also includes dynamic engine mounts and ceramic brakes.
Both models introduce the rear steering first shown on the 911 GT3. Angle of the rear wheels can be varied up to 2.8 degrees depending on vehicle speed. At up to 50km/h, the rear wheels move in the opposite direction the front wheels are turned to �??virtually�?? shorten the wheelbase by 250mm and increase agility, according to Porsche.
Conversely, above 80km/h, the rear wheels turn in parallel with the fronts to �??virtually�?? lengthen the wheelbase by 500mm allowing �??tremendous stability�?�.
Active aerodynamic features standard on both 911 Turbo and Turbo S include a three-stage retractable front spoiler, an adjustable rear wing with three set positions. At the rear wing�??s maximum height, downforce on the rear wheels is claimed to improve to such an extent that the feature alone helped shave two seconds of the Turbo S model�??s Nurburgring circuit time.
While obviously based on the regular Porsche 911 models, the Turbo and Turbo S get mildly enhanced interiors, with standard Bose audio and an optional Burmester system. Radar-controlled cruise control, camera-based road sign and speed limit recognition are being offered for the first time.
The Porsche 911 Turbo and Turbo S models are due in Australia late in 2013, priced from around $360-430K.
Range Rover Sport Review: Quick drive
Land Rover executives won�??t put a figure on the final development cost of the second-generation Range Rover Sport, except to reveal that 6000 engineers were involved and no expense was spared.
Certainly, the build process seems impressive �?" the all-new Range Rover Sport is built on exactly the same production line as its more luxurious Range Rover sibling and it�??s difficult to tell them apart in the Solihull bodyshop as the Swedish-built robots insert 3722 rivets into each all-aluminium monocoque.
The Range Rover Sport used to be built on the same ladder frame chassis as the current Land Rover Discovery, but customers around the globe were chanting a new mantra for the next-generation Sport: �??more Range Rover and more Sport�??.
The message was clear and vision was simple: Start with a clean sheet and set about creating �??The fastest, most agile, most responsive Land Rover ever�?�.
As a result, the Range Rover and upcoming Range Rover Sport are currently the only all-aluminium bodied SUVs in the world, although overall the Sport is 75 per cent bespoke.
The all-new Sport somewhat unsurprisingly promises �??stunning�?? off-road capability �?" but that�??s just assumed isn�??t it? It�??s actually the Sport�??s performance on the tarmac that deserves the highest praise �?" and weight, or rather, weight loss is what plays a key role in the Sport�??s significantly uprated dynamic ability.
Squaring up against its 3.0-litre TDV6 predecessor, the new Range Rover Sport with its similar V6 diesel sheds a whopping 420kg to tip the scales at 2115kg, down from
2535kg.
The resulting lightness has also meant a dramatic improvement in the Range Rover Sport�??s straight-line acceleration.
A brief stint behind the wheel of the entry-level 190kW/600Nm 3.0-litre TDV6 at JLR�??s own UK proving track at their Gaydon headquarters, verified the vehicle�??s published acceleration times.
Pin the right pedal (as we were duly encouraged to do on this occasion) and the new Sport will hit 100km/h in 7.1 seconds, bettering the old model by 1.7 seconds for the same off-the-line sprint.
And somehow it feels even quicker than that behind the wheel. Throttle response is faster, there�??s almost no turbo-lag and the eight-speed ZF auto puts the power down seamlessly.
There�??s a sport mode that holds the gears and quickens throttle response to great effect, but disappointingly the entry-level model misses out on paddleshifters.
It�??s also encouragingly difficult to pick this as a diesel. There�??s none of the usual clatter even on start-up, let alone while winding it up to 220km/h and lifting off for the long left-hander on the back straight.
Road and wind noise is down to 67dB(A) and 29.5dB(A) respectively. That�??s better than key rivals such as the Audi Q7 (69.1/30.6), BMW X5 (69.5/32) and Porsche Cayenne (70/35.5).
Steering feel and response is exceptionally good and we like the move to a smaller, fatter, steering wheel.
The electric power steering is claimed to be 10 per cent quicker than the Range Rover and the variable-ratio system weights up perfectly and feels natural from the straight-ahead. It�??s confidence inspiring even at 200km/h plus.
Our base model Sport TDV6 is equipped with conventional dampers and anti-roll bars, while the more powerful models get adaptive dampers and active anti-roll bars.
However, you can�??t fault the handling or the ride on this entry-level variant �?" both are exceptionally good and offer a huge improvement over the previous generation Sport.
We�??re entering turn one at around 90km/h �?" a reasonable rate of knots for a long-winded corner that continues to tighten up �?" and while there�??s some initial heft, it�??s marvellously well composed and begs you to get back on the power early.
Increasing the pace further there�??s still no tyre squeal and the Sport holds its line while feeling dynamically sound.
The ride is also very impressive, despite riding on optional 21-inch alloy wheels and low profile tyres. There�??s an inherent refinement and softness to this suspension where even sharp ridges on the proving ground don�??t hamper passenger comfort.
It doesn�??t seem to matter how you drive the new Sport, or what condition the surface is, the suspension is able to absorb each and every imperfection on the road.
Overall, the Sport�??s design is more about revolution than evolution, with the styling aligned to the Range Rover Evoque and fewer design cues from the outgoing model.
Inside, it�??s more luxurious. The leather is suppler and the quality of the materials and switchgear has been further refined and closer to that in the Range Rover.
Range Rover Sport ditches the tricky rotary gear selector (borrowed from Jaguar) for a traditional shift lever for a sportier environment. Even the sequential shifts are the right way round �?" pull to change up and push to downshift.
The ergonomics are superb. There�??s a driver-centric approach and 50 per cent less switchgear than the outgoing model.
General comfort levels have been raised significantly from the last version and there�??s a good deal more rear seat leg and headroom in the new Sport.
It�??s also the first Range Rover to offer optional third row seating (electrically powered) but these are thoughtfully kid-friendly.
Land Rover has packed the new Range Rover Sport with a raft of new technology with features including the brand�??s first laser-based head-up display and a 12.3-inch instrument display.
Other kit includes Terrain Response 2, featuring a new Auto setting and the new Wade Sensing that uses senses in the door mirrors to alert the driver of outside water depth.
Land Rover�??s head of design, Gerry McGovern hasn�??t put a foot wrong since he penned the LRX Concept in 2008. That vehicle became the hugely successful Range Rover Evoque.
He followed up with the new-generation Range Rover in 2012, only to outdo himself with the upcoming Range Rover Sport.
While the all-new Sport launches in Europe and other major markets from August 2013, Australian customers will need to wait until November for their cars.
