Ford Fiesta ST Review

The Ford Fiesta ST sees the end of a five-year sabbatical for a high-performance version of the Blue Oval company??s city car.

Ford hasn??t offered a hot Fiesta since the last generation XR4 went off sale in 2008.

The XR4 was a brilliant hatch, and at $24,990 was a performance bargain. But it wasn??t held in the esteem of the then $38,000 RenaultSport Clio but was easily the best hatch below it.

Ford Fiesta ST static rear side

Now, Ford??s upped the ante. For starters, the XR name has gone ?" with the Ford Fiesta ST adopting the same Sports Technologies badging as the Ford Focus ST hot-hatch.

Arriving with the new faclifted Fiesta range, which has given all models an Aston Martin-like gaping front grille, the 17-inch wheels on our UK test car fill the guards nicely, and there??s a properly integrated body kit as well as a neat roof-top rear spoiler giving the ST extra muscle on the outside.

It looks more aggressive than the Focus ST, and far more cohesive than the relatively plain Peugeot 208 GTi that we??ve also driven recently.

Ford Fiesta ST interior LHD

Climb in, and it??s not quite as boy-racer as you??d expect. There??s a pair of excellent colour-coded Recaro seats up front, with ST logos pushing the famed Recaro font down the sides of the bolsters, which hold you in superbly.

The rear, too has the Recaro treatment, while there??s an ST steering-wheel partly covered in perforated leather. In terms of kit, there??s Ford SYNC, with Bluetooth and voice control that actually works, as well as cruise, sat-nav and a USB port.

At the wheel, the dash layout of the Ford Fiesta ST is identical to the top-spec Fiesta, with not a jot of tacky chrome or brightwork added. That??s because the ST doesn??t need to shout about its role as top-dog: there??s no mistaking its brilliance on the road.

Ford Fiesta ST cruising

It starts with its superb engine. The ST??s main rivals are all turbocharged now, so Ford decided the fast Fiesta needed one, too. The 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder is one of the company??s EcoBoost powerplants, so it??s loaded with tech such as lightweight aluminium, direct fuel injection, and the turbo is the latest, most efficient twin-scroll variety.

Power is up a massive 34 per cent ?" to 147kW ?" over the XR4??s 2.0-litre engine and identical to that in the Renault Clio RS200 and 208 GTi, which, coincidentally or not, are also 1.6-litre turbos. Some pundits may claim 132kW for the ST, but it has a 15-second overboost function (as in the Mini Cooper S JCW) where it achieves its highest numbers.

That goes for torque, too, which on overboost jumps from 240Nm to a staggering 290Nm ?" a figure you needed a V8 Holden to beat two decades ago.

Ford Fiesta ST dynamic bend

While there??s a Sound Symposer duct ?" as in the Focus hot-hatch ?" to give the Ford Fiesta ST a nice, warm burble at idle, there??s nothing artificial in the way it pulls off the line. The 6.9 second 0-100km/h time is line-ball with its main rivals, but it??s so torquey that you can sweep through the six-speed manual gearbox without taking a breath.

As with the 208 GTi, however, there??s not automatic option, with both the Peugeot and Ford contrasting with the VW Polo GTI and Clio RS that come with dual-clutch gearboxes only.

Traction off the line is superb, and the three-mode stability control (On, Sport and completely off) doesn??t dampen progress by cutting in violently, but provides subtle interventions to keep it all together. Once you??re up and running, you can stab the throttle in any gear, even sixth, and the ST responds for effortless freeway overtaking.

Ford Fiesta ST cornering

Show it a winding, country road, and you??ll see the Fiesta ST at its best. The firm yet not uncomfortable ride keeps you connected to the road, with superbly weighted electric steering from the driving position that instantly feels natural.

Attack a corner, and the turn-in is super sharp, the front wheels bite and ?" even with stability control off ?" you can nail the throttle early for a quick exit.

Body control is tight, road holding exemplary, and the whole package feels bank-vault tight as the seats hold you firmly but comfortably in place. You??ll easily lift an inside rear wheel around tighter corners, but the whole affair doesn??t feel violent or forced: everything is so well connected, so well balanced, that it??s a breeze to drive at breakneck speeds.

Ford Fiesta ST red corner

It??s not a huge surprise that it??s a great hatch to drive. The Ford Fiesta may be a humble city car ?" or ??superminis?? as they call them in the UK where it??s the best-selling car ?" but it??s already the dynamic benchmark in its class.

The abilities and execution of the Ford Fiesta ST, however, is still far beyond expectations.

It??s lost none of its ability to hit the supermarket, but is the sharpest, most competent and entertaining Fiesta ever built and punches way above its weight.

It makes the new Peugeot 208 GTi look conservative and could threaten the Clio RS??s crown as king of the pocket rockets.

Expect the waiting lists in Europe to be duplicated when the Ford Fiesta ST arrives down under in August.

Renault Clio: diesel dropped, eight-fold sales increase expected for RS

The Renault Clio will not be available with a diesel engine in Australia as originally planned when it arrives in August or September.

At the international launch of the reborn light hatchback last year, Renault Australia committed to a 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel model to act as a range topping variant until the Renaultsport version arrives the following year.

Instead the Clio will launch with a 0.9-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol entry engine, available with a five-speed manual transmission only for around $17K, and a 1.2-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine with six-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Renault Australia corporate communications manager Emily Ambrosy said the decision to ditch diesel was motivated by the fuel efficiency gains made by the petrol engines and the lack of popularity of diesel engines in the hatchback market.

??Petrol fits the demand of the small car market,? Ambrosy said.

The 135Nm turbo three-cylinder uses 4.3L/100km of unleaded combined, compared with the 230Nm turbo-diesel model??s 3.2L/100km, but diesels usually command a price premium of $2000-$3000. As with the petrol three-cylinder, the diesel is available in manual only.

Renault-Captur-26

Ambrosy describes both 2013 and 2014 as years of expected growth for Renault in the Australian market.

With Clio due in August, and the Clio RS and Captur sub-compact SUV in the first half of 2014, the corporate communications manager says Renault Australia expects ??lots? of sales from the two brand new ??pillar? models.

Renault Australia committed to offering keen pricing and specification for both models, with the Clio set to start ??between the Toyota Yaris and Mazda 2? in terms of pricing.

??We want Australians to know what Clio is, to know about its great pricing and what great options it will have,? Ambrosy added.

Renault Clio 4 RS

So far in 2013, local sales are up 66 per cent and Australia continues to be the number-two selling market for Megane RS265 behind France but in front of Japan.

Ambrosy expects that when the Clio RS launches next year, it will rival the Megane RS265 as the number one selling RS model in Australia.

Last year Renault sold 545 Megane RS models locally, compared with just 69 Clio RS models ?" that would indicate the company expects a near-eight-fold increase in sales of the new generation auto-only five-door Clio RS.

2014-Renault-Clio-RS-200-Review-39

Renault Australia expanded its dealer network from 19 to 31 in 2012, and is aiming to close 2013 with 40 dealers. The expansion will be particularly in rural areas, citing new dealerships soon to open in Albury and Bendigo.

With $299 capped-price servicing across the range ?" and to be applied to Clio and Captur ?" for the first three 15,000km/12-month check-ups, and a five-year unlimited-kilometre warranty, Renault Australia continues to hope that buyers will be attracted to a brand that has had some quality issues in the past.

As an example of quality and servicing improvements, Ambrosy said that compared with when it launched in 2010, warranty claims of the Koleos compact SUV are down 57 per cent.

Holden VF Commodore: prices cut by up to $10,000

The new Holden VF Commodore sedan will cost $5000 to $10,000 less the old model when it goes on sale in June.

Pricing for the new-generation large car has leaked in Australian newspapers ahead of official details being released on May 10.

Media including CarAdvice had been provided pricing and specification details under embargo, though the catalyst for the leak appears to be a Holden dealer conference that took place last Friday night.

Holden Calais wagon

The Holden Commodore Evoke base model will start from $34,990, $5000 cheaper than the Omega and Berlina models it replaces.

The new SV6, featuring a bigger V6 than the Evoke, kicks off at $35,990, a saving of nearly $7000 for the manual. An automatic transmission costs $2200 as it does across the VF Commodore range.

V8 buyers get the best news, with the Holden Commodore SS-V sedan (below) dropping $9800 to a starting price of $45,490 ?" bringing the more heavily equipped SS closer in cost to the regular SS that will begin at $41,990.

Holden VF SS V

For the new-generation Holden Commodore V8, there??s the addition of a Redline edition that brings even more gear.

The Holden Commodore is better equipped, though, from every model from the Evoke to the SS-V Redline.

All Commodores ?" including the Evoke CarAdvice spied earlier this year (below) ?" gain as standard semi-automatic parking technology, rear-view camera and electric parking brake.

For the luxury-focused Commodores, the Calais is priced below $40,000 at $39,990 while the longer-wheelbase Caprice has an official sticker of $59,990 according to News Ltd.

Ute models will also feature reduced prices but not to the same extent as the sedan variant.

While Commodore buyers have previously saved thousands of dollars on the official manufacturer pricing, particularly in recent months with the VE model in run-out, the more aggressive pricing points to Holden??s determination to return its large car to the pointy end of the sales charts.

The Commodore??s 15-year run as the country??s best-selling car was ended by the Mazda 3 small car in 2011, while the large car didn??t even make the top 10 list in March and only just scraped in last month.

The new Holden VF Commodore goes on sale in early June, with the first of the HSV Gen-F models ?" which will include the new, super-fast supercharged HSV GTS ?" starting to arrive a few weeks later.

CarAdvice will publish official details and images on Friday May 10, with reviews of the new Holden Commodore range on May 30th.

2013 Honda Accord: pricing and specifications

The 2013 Honda Accord will launch in Australia in June with prices starting from $31,490 for the four-cylinder Accord VTi, a $3300 price increase over the outgoing model.

Honda Australia will continue with the twin-Accord strategy (with Australia remaining the only market in the world where the Accord and Accord Euro are sold side-by-side) as it introduces the more compact, ninth-generation Accord to compete with the likes of the Mazda 6.

2013_Accord_V6_33

The 2013 Honda Accord will be available with both a new 2.4-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and the 3.5-litre V6, which is largely carried over from the previous model.

The four-cylinder??s power output is 129kW (4kW less than the previous generation) while its torque sits at 225Nm (3Nm more than before). Honda??s focus on fuel efficiency has seen a seven per cent improvement, now at 7.9-8.1 litres per 100km depending on variant, and somewhat surprisingly the same five-speed automatic has been carried over.

2013 Honda Accord

The 3.5-litre V6 produces 206kW (up 4kW on the previous model) and an unchanged 339Nm. It??s coupled to a six-speed automatic and employs a new cylinder-deactivation system that now only juggles between three or six cylinders, as opposed to three, four or six cylinders like the previous model. It consumes 9.2L/100km on the combined cycle.

Honda expects 85 per cent of its estimated 300 Accord sales per month to be four-cylinder models, which is why it??s only offering a top-spec variant of the six-cylinder, the$51,990 Accord V6L ?" an increase of $4700 over the previous V6L.

2013_Accord_VTI_03

The four-cylinder line-up comprises the $31,490 VTi, $33,990, VTi-L and $41,490 VTi-S. All prices are higher than the previous Accord and more in line with Mazda??s pricing strategy for its 6.

Whether the new, smaller Accord will remain in thelarge car category or be reclassified as a medium car in the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries?? official data reporting is still to be decided.

2013_Accord_V6_22

From the outside the new Honda Accord is entirely refreshed, but Honda has played it safe in retaining the styling the Accord is known for. New additions include LED daytime running lights and the availability of LED headlights (a first for Honda in Australia) as well as cornering lights.

Interior and engineering highlights include the standard inclusion of an eight-inch colour screen with a reversing camera, as well as the move to a newly developed MacPherson strut front suspension (replacing the old car??s double wishbone system).

2013_Accord_30

Honda will also use the new Accord to introduce a variety of new safety technologies it calls its Advanced Driver Assist System (ADAS). ADAS will include some familiar systems such as lane keep assist, collision mitigation braking system and adaptive cruise control. Some are rather interesting, like the lane keep assist system, which uses cameras located in the side mirrors to show the driver a live video stream of the car??s blind spot on the LCD screen. These safety features are available for $3500 in the four cylinder VTi-L but standard in the V6L.

CarAdvice is currently at the launch of the new Honda Accord. Stay tuned for our full first-drive review, coming soon.
