LOEB CLAIMS SEVENTH MONTE-CARLO VICTORY

2013 Rallye Monte-Carlo Champion : Sebastien Loeb

A dramatic final evening of Rallye Monte-Carlo ended with the cancellation of the last two stages to enable Sebastien Loeb to claim his seventh victory in the opening round of the 2013 FIA World Rally Championship.

The Citroen Total Abu Dhabi pilot led from the second stage on Wednesday and drove his DS3 faultlessly in treacherous weather to win by 1min 39.9sec. Second was Sebastien Ogier, delivering a superb debut for Volkswagen Motorsport’s new Polo R, while Dani Sordo secured third in another DS3.

The final night in the mountains above Monaco produced dramas galore. Three of the top seven on the leaderboard, Evgeny Novikov, Jari-Matti Latvala and Juho Hanninen crashed out in awful conditions on the first pass of the mythical Col de Turini stage.

Organisers then cancelled the final two tests on safety grounds when huge numbers of spectators brought the narrow roads to gridlock.

It was Loeb’s 77th WRC victory and the Frenchman said: “I’m always happy when I win, and Monte-Carlo is one of the most exciting rallies I’ve done. This one was really, really difficult. The conditions were extreme compared to what we have usually and winning wasn’t easy.”

The four-day rally, covering 425.93km over 16 stages, was based in Valence for the opening three legs, before relocating to Monaco. Snow and ice made it one of the toughest ‘Montes’ for years and studded tyres were the only sensible option.

While Loeb’s victory was not a surprise, second for Ogier delighted the 29-year-old Frenchman. He refused to be drawn into comparing stage times with Loeb, who will tackle only four rounds this season.

“I’m so happy, it’s like a victory for me,” he said. “I’m a competitor and I’ve never been happy to finish second but this weekend it was really the target, and to start the season like this is amazing. I’ve been waiting for one year, I’ve done so many tests and it was frustrating sometimes, and now here we are with the Polo on the pace already.”

Sordo’s podium came on his first rally with the Abu Dhabi Citroen team since rejoining them this season. He battled with Novikov most of the rally but when the young Russian ripped the rear left wheel from his Ford Fiesta RS, the Spaniard was promoted into third.

“It has been a very difficult and special Monte-Carlo, not like a normal tarmac rally at all. It has been very easy to make a mistake or lose time. Yeah I’m happy, especially because we didn’t have to go out on the Turini again!” said Sordo.

Mikko Hirvonen cut a frustrated figure for much of the week. But the Finn persevered with his DS3 and the demise of Novikov and Latvala, who hit a wall, allowed him to take fourth.

Bryan Bouffier claimed fifth in another DS3 while Mads Ostberg rounded off the top six in a Fiesta RS, after overcoming confidence problems early in the rally and broken right rear suspension today.

Sepp Wiegand won the new WRC 2 support category in a Skoda Fabia S2000.  The German took the lead on the second stage when Esapekka Lappi retired his similar car with accident damage.  Armin Kremer finished second with Ukraine’s Yuriy Protasov third.

In the WRC 3 support series, Sebastien Chardonnet took the honours in a two-wheel drive Citroen DS3.  The Frenchman was the sole survivor after Renaud Poutot went off.

2012 WRC : Ford Sweeps WRC Podium After DQ

Mikko Hirvonen (FIN) Jarmo Lehtinen (FIN), Citroën DS3 WRC, Citroën Total World Rally Team

The result of the Vodafone Rally de Portugal was turned on its head shortly after Mikko Hirvonen began celebrating his first win for Citroen, when scrutineers found what they deemed to be illegal parts on his DS3.

As a result of the discovery, the Finn was thrown out of the results, handing a first WRC victory to Ford privateer Mads Ostberg and co-driver Jonas Andersson.

The official scrutineering report claimed that Hirvonen's clutch was 'not in conformity with the Homologation Form A5733', and that was not the only irregularity found during the usual post-event checks, although the stewards have decided to make further investigations to determine whether then #2 car's turbo also failed the regulations.

"The scrutineers found differences with both the clutch and the turbocharger," Citroen Racing technical director Xavier Mestelan-Pinon confirmed, as the French team confirnmed its intention to appeal the exclusion.

"The clutch mechanisms of the DS3 WRC are registered with lightening holes, but our supplier recently delivered a lot of these pieces without holes and one of them was mounted on the #2 car. The differences provide no performance gain, since they are heavier than those that were licensed.

"With regard to the turbo, which is a standard piece for all World Rally Cars, the extent of the turbine was reported to exceed the maximum allowed, but this measurement reflects the expansion of the turbine a result of temperatures and very high speeds."

The team's racing director, Yves Matton, claimed that the penalty handed down to Hirvonen, who finally had the chance to better wortld champion team-mate Sebastien Loeb, was out of proportion to the crime committed.

"Our intention was not to cheat and, given that the points raised [by the scrutineers] do not benefit us, we have decided to appeal their decision," he commented.

"I feel especially sorry for Mikko and [co-driver] Jarmo Lehtinen, who produced a perfect performance on a particularly difficult rally. They deserved this first victory with us and I can only apologise on behalf of the entire team. I hope that they will have the opportunity to get back on the top step of the podium very soon."

The surprising result also benefited Evgeny Novikov and Petter Solberg, who are promoted to second and third overall respectively, and has naturally reduced Citroen's advantage over its rivals in the two championships. Loeb remains at the head of the individual standings, but now enjoy a lead of just four points over Solberg, while Citroen's lead in the manufacturers' table is down to a dozen points over Ford.

2012 WRC : Latvala wins Rally Sweden

2012 WRC - Rally Sweden Winners : Jari-Matti Latvala & Miikka Anttila - Ford Fiesta WRC - FORD WRT

Ford World Rally Team drivers Jari-Matti Latvala and Miikka Anttila won Rally Sweden today by 16.6sec after a tense finale to this second round of the FIA World Rally Championship.  Victory in a Ford Fiesta RS World Rally Car was Ford’s sixth consecutive success at the only true winter rally of the season.

Jari-Matti Latvala & Miikka Anttila - Ford Fiesta WRC - FORD WRT

It was Latvala’s second win in Sweden, and it came despite his comfortable lead being slashed when he hit a rogue rock and punctured a tyre with just two more speed tests remaining before the finish. Team-mates Petter Solberg and Chris Patterson finished fourth in another Fiesta RS WRC, losing a potential podium position when they hit the same rock, with the same outcome.

It was the 50th world rally win for the Ford / M-Sport partnership since it started in 1997, and Fiesta RS WRCs filled four of the top five places.

Although temperatures were milder than normal, the snow and ice-covered roads presented a tough challenge as the mercury hovered around -10ºC.  After an opening leg based mainly in Norway, the rally returned to Sweden for the final two days’ competition close to Hagfors.  Drivers tackled 24 special stages covering 349.16km before this afternoon’s finish in the host city of Karlstad.

Latvala stamped his mark on the rally from the first moment, by setting fastest time in Thursday’s qualifying.  It enabled the 26-year-old to select a start position well down the running order, to obtain better conditions after the loose snow was swept away.

He built a 16.8sec during Friday’s opening leg and stretched his advantage over former team-mate Mikko Hirvonen to 23.0sec yesterday, after shrewd management of the stud wear on his Michelin tyres.  He extended his lead to 35.6sec during today’s final leg, before hitting an exposed rock in the rutted snow and ice and puncturing the front right tyre.

The lead was cut to just 8.4sec, but fastest time under extreme pressure in the penultimate stage allowed him to pull clear again.  It was Latvala’s ninth stage win of the rally.

“Four years ago I won my first world rally here and became the youngest driver to do so,” he said.  “To come back and win for a second time is very special.  After retiring from the first round last month, I was under heavy pressure to do well.  After making a mistake and hitting a rock, I knew I had to summon some extra speed and attack hard through the penultimate stage.

“It feels like a heavy weight has been lifted from my shoulders.  I’ve learned to stay calm when things go wrong and that paid dividends today.  I knew Mikko would attack hard this morning so I was wide awake and ready for it.  I had a comfortable lead before everything changed with just two stages to go, but I kept my cool,” he added.

Urged on by his home fans, Solberg held second on the opening day in Norway before a spin cost time.  He ended the leg in third and remained there yesterday, despite pressure from fellow countryman Mads Østberg.  The duo were separated by just 4.9sec when Solberg clipped the same rock as Latvala and the 37-year-old had to settle for fourth.  However, he claimed bonus points by finishing second on the final Power Stage.

“I was disappointed to lose third, but I’m third in the championship and closed on the leader so it was a good weekend,” he said.  “I hit the same rock as Jari-Matti.  I wasn’t cutting the bend but it was in the middle of the ruts and I couldn’t avoid it.  It’s my first rally in the Fiesta RS WRC on the loose and I’m really encouraged to have been so competitively so quickly.

Ford World Rally Team director Malcolm Wilson was delighted with the landmark victory for the Ford / M-Sport partnership.  “Jari-Matti dominated from start to finish.  We had a scare towards the end.  This morning we were concerned that he drove so fast when he had a big lead, but given what happened this afternoon, it’s a good job he did.  It’s a milestone victory for the team and with the confidence he has in the car, I’m sure there will be more to come,” he said.

Ford of Europe motorsport chief Gerard Quinn said: “A victory and seven cars in the top 10 represents a great weekend for Ford.  Jari-Matti was in control from the very beginning and even when he received a setback this afternoon, he was strong enough to recover and seal the win.  Petter drove well and his speed with a new car so early in the season bodes well for the future.”

2012 WRC : Loeb and Elena win Rallye Monte-Carlo for the sixth time

2012 WRC - Rallye Monte-Carlo winners : Sébastien Loeb and Daniel Elena - Citroën Total World Rally Team

  • Loeb and Elena win Rallye Monte-Carlo for the sixth time
  • Citroën Total World Rally Team score a 1-2 finish in the power stage for additional points
  • Citroën now lead both the drivers and manufacturers championship standings
The 80th Rallye Monte-Carlo drew to a close yesterday with victory going to Sébastien Loeb and Daniel Elena, their sixth win in the Principality. The eight-time World Champions enjoyed a clean sweep as they also picked up the three bonus points awarded to the winner of the Power Stage. Fourth overall in the rally, Mikko Hirvonen and Jarmo Lehtinen also collected two points for their performance on the final stage. This result means that Citroën Total World Rally Team takes the lead in the Manufacturers’ World Championship.

After four long days’ racing, the final day of the Rallye Monte-Carlo was without doubt the shortest ever seen in the history of the World Championship: the 5.16km of the eighteenth stage, on a route between Ste Agnès and the Col de la Madone, were covered in under 3m30s by the leading WRC cars.

At the stop control, Sébastien Loeb and Daniel Elena were pleased to see that they had recorded the fastest time, earning them three additional points in the Drivers’ World Championship. “I had decided to push because these points could make all the difference in deciding who wins the title,” explained Sébastien Loeb. “Apart from the points scored, I am happy to win a rally that means a lot to me. There were a lot of supporters alongside the roads and I also wanted to win for them. It’s a big gap to second, but I wouldn’t say that this was an easy win. We had to deal with all sorts of conditions and my lead was largely built on better tyre choices, which were mainly down to the work of Citroën Racing’s technical team and our tyre partner Michelin. We were able to choose between five types of tyres and we always managed to pick the right tyres for the circumstances. The Citroën DS3 WRC worked like a dream. I felt comfortable from the start of the rally and I managed to get into a good rhythm. It’s certainly a nice way to start the season…”

Second in the Power Stage, Mikko Hirvonen and Jarmo Lehtinen ended their first rally with Citroën Total World Rally Team in fourth place overall. “It wasn’t the easiest rally for a first race in a new car, but I am pleased with the result,” confirmed the Finn. “The two days we had snow were particularly difficult. On tarmac, I was more comfortable and I was able to set some good times. I had to take it easy, avoid making mistakes and focus on getting to the finish to score some points. That's exactly what we did. I can’t wait now to be in Sweden, I am really looking forward to racing there.”

For his first rally in charge of Citroën Racing, Yves Matton praised the performance of the entire team: “It’s important to start the season on a positive note and great to win a rally as legendary as Monte-Carlo. One of the key factors was tyre choice. The analysis work performed prior to the rally by our engineers, who had imagined almost every possible eventuality, helped us to make the right choices. Sébastien was impressive in terms of his race management. He was patient and took it a little easier when necessary and then pushed when the conditions enabled him to do so.

Mikko did what we asked of him: made it to the finish in a good position. He took it step by step, but his three fastest stage times showed that he was getting to grips with the car. He gave himself the time he needed and that demonstrates his professionalism.”

“This is an exciting result. Once again, I was impressed by the entire team. It is very satisfying to see everyone working in relaxed fashion. I’m also pleased to see that Mikko and Jarmo are integrating well at Citroën Racing. The red army is on its way again!” praised Frédéric Banzet, CEO of the Citroën Brand.
The next event in the World Rally Championship will be held in Sweden between 9th and 12th February.
